Multinational Senior Community Meeting – April 18

Minutes (Proceedings): 14:00 start

Participants: About 30 (15 non-Japanese, 2 staff members from Int’l Communication Plaza and Japanese including four pension recipients.)

1. Brief self-introduction of participants (each person in the room gave a short introduction

2.   IMG_0001 Presentation by Ms. Kaori Okuda on ‘Pension System in Japan’

After her basic presentation on the primary features of the system, many questions were raised.  Ms. Okuda recommends that everyone refer to the Japan Pension Service (http://www.nenkin.go.jp) and the Private School Pension (http://www.shigakukyousai.jp/) home pages for more detailed information, both are available in English. The websites are organized very well and the information provided there should answer a lot of the questions you might have.

  1. Terminology in Japanese corresponding to the English was requested as often everyone at work hears the terminology in Japanese.  So it was suggested to make an English-Japanese glossary for pension terms and other terms of interest to seniors.

  1. Pension offices in Sapporo, in general, are not able to cope adequately with non-Japanese speaking inquirers, therefore foreigners are encouraged to come with a native Japanese speaker. There are four offices in Sapporo. Locations of all offices are indicated on the JPS website.

  1. Answers to some of the questions asked today differ from country to country, according to the International Agreements with the Japanese government.  Please go to Japan Pension System website mentioned above, if you want to know more about these agreements. The Philippines agreement is still under negotiation.

  1. There was some discussion on Lump-sum Withdrawal Payments (exclusively for non-Japanese citizens) who paid into the Pension System while living and working in Japan, and then decided to leave the country. You have two years to file for the payment. Details are available in a variety of languages at the following link: http://www.nenkin.go.jp/n/www/english/detail.jsp?id=10

  1. Japanese pension system is always subject to change, so we need to keep an eye on it: how, when and what amounts, etc.

  1. The name of this group was discussed and finally we reached a consensus: M.S.C standing for Multinational Senior Community. One does not have to be a certain age to participate, however the primary focus of presentations will be on topics of interest to seniors.

  1. To operate this community smoothly, these people volunteered to serve on the core committee: Ken, Merissa, Kathleen Riggins along with Michiyo, Yoko and Naomi.  The committee meetings will be held at either L-Plaza or the Int’l Communication Plaza

  1. Next meeting of MSC will be on June 27th, Saturday 10-12 a.m. at Sapporo International Plaza

We are planning to have our meeting basically every other month.

Lastly Amanda introduced the movie ‘毎日がAlzheimer’  she has organized for the showing in Sapporo on May 23rd (Sat).(Japanese only, but very moving film).

Wheelchair flew to Korea

DSCN6116I took a wheelchair to Hanboet Foundation in Seoul through ‘Go!Fy!Wheelchairs’ which I founded in 1998. Hanboet now has a ‘wheelchair center’ in Myanmar and the one I took will be delivered to a person there later. This time I ran 10km marathon in Gyeongju under the tunnel of cherry blossoms and enjoyed talking to friends in Busan and Seoul.

Gentle Mind

I went to Tsukigata 50 km away from Sapporo to get  new clothes from the shop which just closed its history after 80 years. The owner, Mrs. Haruna thought that children’s clothes may be used somewhere abroad and saved them. It’s so kind of her to think about children abroad.

Most of the clothes will go to Kenya and the Philippines later, but this morning Ms. Shishido came to take some for the frist graders in spring. Most of them are from Fukushima.

On February 7th, we had the second meeting of ‘Aging in Place’ with 15 attendants. We had a special guest, Mr. Takiya, certified and registered public tax accountant, who taught us about taxation in general. Its information is usuful to Non-Japanese and Japanese as well. IMG_0007After his lecture, we talked over tea and cake on various topics. We will have the next meeting on April 18th, Saturday afternoon. Our target is on seniors, but anybody who is interested in this program will be welcomed.

We sent some goods to Manila and here’s a photo of children wearing Nippon Ham Fighters’ T-shirts at Nayon Ng Kabataan, Chileren’s Home.

Short Film Shooting

After the maintenance clinic training, we shot a short video about meeting of the disabled and the non-disabled and changing of his concept towards PWDs. (People with disabilities) All the actors were amateurs but they really acted well after taking a few shots. This short film clip  are registered for Sinulog video and photo contest, so we made a quick 10 minutes version, which we think rather good.
