Wheelchair Cafe held in Cebu 車いすカフェ

leave a comment »

It has been more than three months since we did this ‘wheelchair cafe’ in Cebu. I have waited to finish the whole project, but feel that at least I have to write a bit about our activities. This was funded by ‘Imai Memorial Foundation’ and it was meant to follow what we did with JICA early this year.

We had nearly 40 participants during our operation of ‘Wheelchair cafe’ and we could fix or maintained some 15-20 wheelchairs there. Some participants came from the neighbors city of Talisay to help us, because they were trained in January. Overall this tproject was successful and we want to continue supporting the people with disabilities in the Philippines.

Announcement of new project to support non-Japanese senior residents in Sapporo and visitors from abroad

We’re going to have a kick-off meeting for the projects above. We invite you to join us for brain storming and some discussion.

Date: December 26th, Friday 18-20:00

Place: Sapporo L-plaza 2F Meeting room

All the discussion will be in English.

Contact: 080-1899-5055 (Michiyo Yoshida)

There are an estimated 20,000 non-Japanese living in Sapporo.  Some native speaker English teachers, now senior citizens, have lived here as long as 40 or more years, having dedicated themselves to English language education for the people of Sapporo.  Some wish to remain in Sapporo for the rest of their lives.  However, they often find it rather difficult to understand and/or don’t have adequate information about the welfare services for senior citizens provided by private enterprises and/or national and local governments such as long-term care insurance or kaigo hoken.  It is our intention to form a group that communicates in English to support these friends.

Moreover, tourists from countries such as China, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand have been increasing in Sapporo.  Last year we were able to support such a visitor who got sick late at night when the hospital staff could not communicate with the person in English.  For starters, there is a possibility of supporting such cases via phone or Skype.  We would like these visitors to be able to stay in Sapporo comfortably and well with the support of Sapporo residents whose communication skills can be of service to them.

We hope that those reading this announcement will understand our intentions and join the discussions to get the project started.  Basically, discussions would be in English.  If interested, please contact us at  Let’s establish a clear plan and strive to provide needed services for our international friends.

Asking for Donation 寄付のお願い

leave a comment »

Our activities are supported by donation.

In the fiscal year 2014 (April 2014 – March 2015), we put a stress on supporting the Philippines under three projects as follows;

  • To support people who are (will be ) the victims of typhoon, landslides and other disasters. ~ We send them new towels, toothbrushes and soap (first-aid set), baby and children’s clothes as well as new under wears for adults in a huge box two times in September and October.
  • To cheer up people who are having a hard time by sending Christmas cards. ~ We did this last year at the time of big typhoon Haiyan and collected 15000 cards. We will call out through Facebook in November and send them by EMS. We need donation for postal cost.
  • To keep up a project with people with disabilities in Cebu. ~ We’re trying to hand out the skills of wheelchair maintenance together with necessary tools and devices. We will send people with skills to implement the project in January 2015.

Here’s a special account for the support to the Philippines.

More than 1000 yen donation is welcomed.

leave a comment »

In the Philippines typhoon season has come and they had some casualtiy in the north of Manila. Every year we send a big box filled with clothes, toys, stationery, and towels. This year we laerned from our guest speaker Potsky working as a Psychologist for children that the first things the suffered people need are towel+toothbrush+soap. Then I started collecting items and yesterday with the help of a friend we finishe packing one super big box weighed 48.5kg – My problem now is how to get through to the door. We have some donation needed for the Philippines so we opend up the account on the project. I will write about that in the separte blog.
